KRONEN Vegetable Slicer and Cutting FAQs

How does a belt cutter vegetable slicer machine work?

A belt cutter carries product along an infeed belt, under a hold-down that keeps it steady, into a rotating knife. The cut thickness, hold-down pressure, knife speed and belt speed are all set for the product, so the machine can slice, shred, grate or dice with consistent results. On the KRONEN GS 10-2, the cutting thickness adjusts from 0.5 to 50 mm and knives change without tools. Proquip Solutions is the authorised New Zealand distributor for KRONEN.

What is the difference between the KRONEN GS 10-2 and GS 20 belt cutters?

The GS 10-2 has a 125 mm-wide infeed belt and suits a very wide range of prepared products, processing up to 1,500 kg per hour depending on the product and cut. The GS 20 has a wider 250 mm belt designed to take whole heads of lettuce or cabbage, with stored cutting programs and digital cut-size adjustment from 1 to 50 mm while running. The GS 20 can also be mounted on harvesters. See the GS 10-2 and GS 20.

Can one cutting machine handle lettuce, meat, cheese and bread?

Yes, a multi-purpose belt cutter can. The KRONEN GS 10-2 cuts salad leaves, vegetables, fruit, herbs, raw and cooked meat, fish, vegan meat substitutes, baked goods, cheese and nuts, with the knife and settings changed for each product. That makes it a good fit for kitchens, food service suppliers and processors running several product lines on one machine.

How do I core cabbage, lettuce and peppers quickly?

Coring by hand is one of the slowest jobs in vegetable preparation. A cabbage corer such as the KRONEN KSB-2 removes the core from whole cabbages before cutting, a multicorer handles several heads at once, and a pepper coring and dividing machine like the KRONEN PDS4L removes the core and splits peppers in one step. These machines make preparation faster and more consistent, and free up staff for the rest of the line.

Should I choose a belt cutter or a cube and strip cutting machine?

Belt cutters suit slices, shreds and strips across a very wide range of products, including leafy and soft products. A cube, strip and slice machine like the KRONEN KUJ-V is designed for precise, uniform dicing of firmer vegetables and fruit, where exact cube size matters for cooking, ready meals or pack weights. Many processors use both, depending on their product mix.

Why is my cut product bruised, uneven or wet?

The most common causes are blunt or wrong knives for the product, hold-down pressure or belt speed set incorrectly, and product that hasn't been prepared properly, such as cored or peeled, before cutting. Blunt knives crush cells instead of slicing them cleanly, which causes bruising, liquid loss and shorter shelf life. Regular knife maintenance and setting the machine for each product fix most cutting quality problems.
