Quadro Comil FAQs

What is a Quadro Comil?

The Quadro Comil is the original conical screen mill, invented by Quadro Engineering in 1976. A rotating impeller inside a conical screen gently sizes, deagglomerates, sieves and disperses powders and granules, both wet and dry. It's an industry standard in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, chemical and personal care manufacturing, wherever precise, repeatable particle size matters. Proquip Solutions is the authorised New Zealand distributor for Quadro.

Do I need an underdriven or overdriven Comil?

It mostly depends on how the mill fits into your process. The overdriven Comil is the simplest and most economical to maintain and operate, with the widest capacity range, up to 54,500 kg per hour. The underdriven Comil has a smaller footprint, inline design and a housing about 30 percent lower, so it suits tight spaces and mills connected to other equipment, a lift, a wall or an isolator. It handles from a few grams up to 15,900 kg per hour. See the underdriven and overdriven Comil.

How does a Comil keep fines and heat low?

A Comil works at relatively low speed, pushing product gently through the screen rather than smashing it apart. This gentle action keeps heat build-up low and produces minimal fines, giving a consistent particle size with less dust and less off-spec product. That makes Comils well suited to heat-sensitive powders, granules and active ingredients.

Can a Comil be used in GMP and high-containment production?

Yes. The underdriven Comil meets cGMP, CE, OSHA and ATEX requirements, and its compact inline design can be mounted to a wall, lift or isolator, which suits pharmaceutical and nutraceutical plants with strict containment and hygiene needs. Tell us your containment level and validation requirements, and we'll confirm the right configuration with Quadro.

How quickly can I change screens and impellers between products?

Fast changeovers keep downtime low when you run several products. The underdriven Comil uses a spacer-less design, so impellers and screens can be changed quickly without the time-consuming gap setting that spacers require, which also avoids setup errors. Quadro offers a wide selection of screens and impellers to match each product's target particle size.

What is the SDX milling and sifting platform?

The SDX is a production-scale platform with interchangeable heads, developed by Quadro with sister company Fitzpatrick. One drive unit can switch between conical milling, hammer milling and sifting in seconds, so processors with several products or processes can use one machine instead of three. See the SDX platform.

Do I need a security screener after milling?

A security screener checks powder just before packing or the next process, removing foreign bodies, oversize particles and lumps that could reach a customer. For food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products, it's an important last line of defence for product safety and brand protection. The Quadro FlexSift is an industrial powder security screener. See the Quadro FlexSift.

Are there budget-friendly options for milling equipment?

Yes. Alongside our main range, we offer economy machines that aren't listed on the website, as well as used equipment, rentals and finance options to spread the cost. Tell us about your product, output and budget, and we'll recommend the options that suit your situation.
