GKS Vertical Packaging Line FAQs

What does a complete vertical packaging line include?

A typical line starts with an infeed conveyor or elevator, then a weigher or doser that measures each portion, the vertical packaging machine that forms, fills and seals the bags, and end-of-line equipment such as a checkweigher, metal detector and case packing. GKS supplies vertical packaging machines and multihead weighers as integrated lines, and Proquip Solutions installs and supports complete packaging lines across New Zealand.

What should I know before switching from plastic to paper bags?

Paper behaves differently from plastic film: it stretches less, needs different sealing, and usually gives less protection against moisture and oxygen. That makes it ideal for dry products such as pasta, rice, sugar, flour and some snacks, but less suited to wet or long-shelf-life products without a barrier coating. Testing your product in paper before committing is the safest approach. The GKS LEAF runs paper and plastic film, so you can move to paper gradually. See the GKS LEAF.

How do I stop leaking or poorly sealed bags?

Most seal problems come from product or dust caught in the seal area, the wrong seal temperature, pressure or time for the film, worn or dirty sealing jaws, or a film that doesn't suit the machine. Timing the product drop so it clears the seal, keeping jaws clean and matching seal settings to your film fixes most issues. If leaks continue, it may be worth reviewing the machine or film for your product.

How do I keep snacks, nuts and coffee fresh in bags?

Freshness depends on keeping oxygen and moisture out. Barrier films protect the product, gas flushing replaces the air in the bag with nitrogen to slow staling, and coffee bags often use a one-way valve to release gas without letting air in. Strong, consistent seals matter as much as the film. Tell us your product and target shelf life and we'll recommend the right film and machine options.

How long does it take to change bag sizes on a vertical packaging machine?

Changing bag width usually means swapping the forming tube and collar, while bag length is often set on the machine's controls. Machines designed for flexible formats, such as the GKS FLEX-M, make changeovers quicker and easier, which suits manufacturers running several products or pack sizes on one line. See the GKS FLEX-M.

Can a small business replace hand bagging with a machine?

Yes. A compact or entry-level vertical packaging machine can replace hand bagging with consistent weights, neater bags and much higher output, often with the same number of staff. The GKS EASY is an entry-level machine for businesses taking this step, and the GKS MINI suits small portions where space is limited. See the GKS EASY and GKS MINI.
